January Favorites 2014

Beauty
MAC Mineralize Blush in Dainty (review here) is a pretty everyday pink shade that gives me a natural glow and makes me look awake on those early mornings when I don't get enough sleep. The Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation is my most worn foundation. I know I talk about this a lot but that's because I haven't found anything that I like better than this. It has good coverage, lasts all day and looks natural. I love it because it feels lightweight on my skin. The only downside to this foundation is the limited shade selection. I'm not the palest person and I wear the lightest shade, 51 Vanille Clair/Light Vanilla. It's too light for me in summer but it's perfect right now.

Skincare
La Roche-Posay Effaclar DUO and La Roche-Posay Toleriane Soothing Protective Skincare have been my skin saviors this month. Effaclar DUO (review here) gets rid of unwanted blemishes that pop up. Toleriane Soothing Protective Skincare is for normal to combination intolerant skin. It has become my go-to moisturizer. I've been using it morning and night. It feels soothing on my skin, doesn't break me out, moisturizes my dry patches and controls the oil in my t-zone. After using it for a week I noticed that my forehead looked less oily. My skin seems to be loving it. The only downside about this is the size of the tube is quite small. It's 40ml and since I've been using it morning and night I fear that it will run out fast. It doesn't help that it costs $29.50 CAD.

TV
Chicago Fire has been my obsession this month and I've been really  liking its spin-off show Chicago PD. Both shows are really connected so I feel like I need to watch them both, although I prefer Chicago Fire.

Music
Falling Head - The George Twins
Unconditionally (Katy Perry Cover) - The George Twins

Recipes
Fiesta Chicken - foolproof slow cooker recipe
Coconut Chicken - this tastes amazing with some of sriracha on the side
Apple Cinnamon Smoothie - it's like apple pie in a cup

The Most Repurchased Beauty Products TAG!

Natalie Love Beauty created this tag. I thought it would be fun to do. It really got me thinking about products I've loved throughout the years. Thanks for coming up with this tag Natalie! :)

MOST REPURCHASED: MAKEUP

Face
- Primer: N/A - I haven't found my HG primer yet so I've never repurchased one.
- Foundation: Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation - takes away the dullness of winter skin and has good coverage.
- BB/CC/DD (let's call it alphabet) Cream: N/A - I've tried the Marcelle BB Cream and it broke me out so much that I stayed away from BB Cream for a year. I like the Rimmel BB Cream but it can make me shiny throughout the day so I don't think I would repurchase it. I would like to try the Physician's Formula Organic Wear CC Cream because I've heard good things about it. I've repurchased the Physician's Formula Organic Wear Tinted Moisturizer a few times. I eventually stopped buying it because I would go through a bottle so quickly and it would make my forehead shiny.
- Concealer: Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer in Radiant - It just brightens up my eye area and doubles as a highlighter. I've also repurchased the Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer a few times because it's easy to apply and has good coverage.
- Powder: Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in 001 Transparent - it does what the name implies, keeps you matte.
- Blush: Rimmel Powder Blush in Santa Rose - it adds a natural flush and looks great with a tan. It was the first blush I ever bought. If you can find it I'd highly recommend it.
- Bronzer: NYC Smooth Skin Bronzer in Sunny - I don't use much bronzer and this one gets the job done.
- Highlighter: Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer in Radiant
- Makeup Setting Spray: Urban Decay All Nighter - It helps make my makeup last all day.

Eyes
- Primer: NARS pro prime smudge proof eyeshadow base - the absolute best primer for oily eyelids.
- Eye Shadow (Powder/Cream):
- Mascara: CoverGirl Clump Crusher (waterproof version) - looks natural, lengthens and makes my lashes look better. Before that I used to always repurchase the Revlon Growluscious mascara because it made my lashes look fuller.
- Eyeliner: Rimmel Scandeaeyes Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in Nude - great for brightening up your lower lash liner. Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Eyeliner Trio in Warm Nude - comes with 3 eyeliners, copper, pewter and black, they don't smudge and are very pigmented.
- Brow Definer: any brown eyeshadow
- Brow Gel: Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara - I used to use this on my brows back in highschool when I didn't even know that brow gel existed.

Lips
- Lip Balm/Tinted Lip Balm: Maybelline Babylips in Quenched - good for when you're on the go because it's clear and smells like lemon (I love lemon).
- Lipliner: N/A
- Lipstick/ Lip Stain/ Lip Butter: MAC Syrup - my favorite MLBB shade
- Lipgloss: When I was in high school I always wore the Maybelline Shine Sensational Lip Gloss in Glamorous Guava. I was obsessed with it. I loved the scent and it made my lips feel nice. I don't wear much lip gloss anymore and if I were to purchase a lip gloss right now it would be anything from NYX.
- Lip Scrub: N/A - I make my own. 1tbls coconut oil, 2tbls raw sugar, 1-2tsp honey, 1-2tsp olive oil. (I use less honey and olive oil because I like it to have a thick consistancy).

MOST REPURCHASED: SKIN CARE

- Moisturizer: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream - I don't know how many times I've repurchases this. I just love it so much. It's good for getting rid of dry patches. Nivea Creme - the original cream in the blue tub. When I was a teenage when my skin would get irritated I would use this and it would get my skin back to normal in a few days. It's really thick, unscented and affordable. I've found products that I prefer but this is a classic.
- Cleanser: Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Redness Soothing  - I've used this for years and it always helped control my breakouts.
- Exfoliator/Scrub : Neutrogena Oil  Acne Wash Free Redness Soothing gentle scrub - I honestly only use it because sometimes they include it for free with the face wash.
- Toner: I don't always use a toner and when I was to use a toner type product I use Bioderma Sensibio H20 because it feels refreshing
- Makeup Remover: Bioderma Sensibio H20 (HG status) and the Aveeno Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes - feels soothing and doesn't irritate my eyes.
- Serum: N/A - I haven't found a good one yet.
- Mask: N/A - I make my own. 2 tbls Plain Greek Yogurt, about 5 or 6 drops of Vitamin E oil and 1tbls honey. It's very hydrating.
- Spot Treatment: La Roche-Posay Effaclar DUO - dries out break outs and prevents new one from popping up. When I was a teenage I always used the Clean & Clear Acne Spot Treatment. That stuff was amazing. It worked so fast. I'd put it on at night and then in the morning my zip would actually be smaller and in 2 or 3 days it would be gone. Sadly, it doesn't work on me anymore.
- Pore Strips: N/A
- Eye Cream: N/A - right now I use coconut oil but I'm still on the hunt for the perfect hydrating eye cream.
- Hand Cream: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream - my HG hand cream. I also use it on dry patches on my face and body to sooth my skin.
- Body Lotion: Aveeno Daily Moisturizer for Dry Skin - I've used it for years. There's always a bottle of it in my house because my mother loves it.
- Sunscreen: Hawaiian Tropics Silk Hydration Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 - I burn easily and when I use this I don't get a sunburn. It smells like coconut. It also has moisturizing ribbons it it so it feels good on the skin.
- Self Tanner: Jergens Natural Glow + Firming Daily Moisturizer - it builds up gradually so it looks natural.

- Hair Mask: N/A
- Hair Oil: Josie Maran Argan oil - nourishes the ends of my hair

Is it Worth the Hype? La Roche-Posay Effaclar DUO

La Roche-Posay Effaclar DUO is a dual action acne treatment that is supposed to reduce the number and severity of acne pimples and purify clogged pores. The formula is designed to dry, and help clear up acne and heal the skin. It's also supposed to penetrate the pores to prevent acne. I've tried many acne spot treatments over the years and I think this one is one of the best. I don't get many breakouts now that I'm an adult. This is great to have on hand because I know that it will work when I do break out. This product dries out and gets rid of my blemishes in a few days to a week. I do think that I have less breakouts since I started using this. It is drying, therefore it's important to moisturize a little more than usual when using this. I know that when I put this on a blemish that is near a dry patch at night it will be even more dry and look flaky in the morning. I usually apply this over my moisturizer to try to prevent the flakiness but it still gets dry. It contains salicylic acid so it will work if your skin responds well to that.

I've tried La Roche-Posay Effaclar K over the summer and I find that it works well but it seems to be more targeted towards acne scarring and smoothing skin texture. After using it for a few months I hated its chemical scent and the tube that it came in. It's also for oily skin with irregular skin texture and imperfections. I have combination to dry skin so it was very drying on my skin. Effaclar DUO doesn't seems to have a scent and is for acne prone skin with clogged pores. After having tried both of them I think this one is a better fit for my skin concerns.

Overall, this is a good acne treatment to keep in your stash for those unexpected breakouts.
Is it worth the hype? Yes.

Sincerely, JoJo.♥

Beloved Blushes: MAC Mineralize Blush in Dainty

Dainty is my first MAC blush and so far the only one I own. I bought this shade on recommendation by the makeup artist working there. I was looking for an everyday blush and she recommended this one.

MAC describes this color as a light yellow pink with gold pearl. It looks like a salmon color but it's more pink in person. It's a light pink with shimmer that works well to add a natural glow to the cheeks.

This blush is extremely pigmented and a little bit goes a very long way. I find that it requires a lot of blending. I suggest using a very light hand or else it might look a little clownish.

Overall it's a beautiful color and makes you look happy and awake. It really brightens up my face. You just need to be careful when applying it. It goes good with any makeup look that you're doing and in any season. If you want pink but not barbie pink this would be a good choice. I've heard that it's a dupe for NARS Deep Throat. By the swatches I've seen I'd say they look very similar. If you want to compare Dainty to NARS Orgasm, Orgasm is more peachy, less pigmented and the gold shimmer is more pronounced.

Mac Mineralize blushes retail for $29 CAD.

Beloved Blushes: NARS Orgasm

I love blush. I decided to start a series on my blog where I showcase my favorite ones. First up is my all-time favorite blush that is responsible for my blush love affair: NARS Orgasm.

NARS Orgasm, while the name is questionable, is a universally flattering color. It's a peachy pink with gold shimmer. It's a cult classic and the first high end blush I ever bought. It started my obsession with NARS as well.

I love this blush because it goes with any look. Whether you're wearing minimal make up or a full face of make up this blush adds the perfect finishing touch. It just brightens up your faces by giving your cheeks a beautiful flush. It looks natural even though it has shimmer. On days when I'm not wearing much makeup I still wear this because it makes me look awake.

It's actually quite difficult to swatch but on your cheeks a little bit goes very a long way. It's easy to blend out if you apply too much and easy to build up as well.

I've has this blush for almost 2 years. It's my most used blush and I've barely made a dent in it. I love this blush and I would recommend it to anyone.

NARS blushes retail for $28 US/$32 CAD.

What's your favorite blush?

Sincerely, JoJo.♥

NOTD: Nails Inc. Elizabeth Street

Nails Inc. Elizabeth Street is described as a delicate nude cream nail polish. I would call it a sheer baby pink. Nails Inc. has impressed me over the past year with their polishes. I wear Porchester Square and Jermyn Street more than any other of the nail polishes that I own. I was hoping that Elizabeth Street would live up to the high standards of the other two polishes, but sadly it did not.

First of all, the formula is very sheer. I applied three coats and you can still see the line of my nails showing. It actually didn't bother me very much because the color looks classic and girly. My guess is that you would probably need four or five coats for it to be opaque. Secondly, it chipped on the second day. By the end of the second day of wearing this polish there were visible cracks in it. I would say that this polish lasts and looks nice on the nails for one day. I wouldn't recommend this polish unless you're okay with changing your polish every single day. Overall Nails Inc. is a great nail polish brand but this particular shade isn't. It's sheer making it a long process to apply and it's not long lasting. If you're looking for an opaque pale pink polish I'd recommend Essie Fiji.

Nails Inc. polishes retail around $11.50 CAD.

2014 Beauty Goals

I never make New Year's Resolutions because I never stick to them. This year I've been inspired by Vivianna Does Makeup's Beauty Bucket List to set some goals related to beauty for myself to accomplish. They're all things that I've been meaning to do but I didn't make the time to actually do.

1. A Lighter Approach
I want to find a tinted moisturizer that has a decent amount of coverage and lasts all day. Sometimes I want to even out my skin tone but I don't want feel like going through the trouble blending out foundation with a brush or sponge. I really need to find a product that will feel light and be easy to apply and blend with my fingers. It would also cut down on the time it would take me to do my makeup in the morning.

2. Prime Time
I'm consistent with priming my eyes before applying eyeshadow and I found the perfect eyeshadow primer for my oily eyelids in 2013. In 2014, I want to find a primer that won't break me out. I have sensitive skin so I really need to do my research before I go buy a primer.

3. Skincare Regime?
I want to find a good moisturizer that will take care of my dry patches, balance my oily t-zone and won't break me out. Again, the sensitive skin issue makes it hard to find a moisturizer with the right amount of moisture. I also want to find a very moisturizing eye cream for my dry under eye are.

4. A Clean Brush is a Happy Brush
I think everyone is guilty of forgetting to wash their makeup brushes. Sometimes I don't clean my brushes for a month and that's not good for my brushes or my face. This year, I want to make a point to wash my make up brushes once a week.

What are your beauty goals for 2014?

Sincerely, JoJo. ♥

NOTD: Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel in Beige Distinction

I've heard a lot about the Bourjois 1 Seconde nail polish range and I had been wanting to try it for a while. I stumbled upon it at my local drugstore back in September and jumped at the chance to try it. I got the shade Beige Distinction, a classic beige color, because at the time I needed a color that would look professional.
The Bourjois 1 Second nail polish range is meant to have a gel like texture, be opaque in one stroke and dry in about 50 seconds. The brush is big and can cover your whole nail in one swipe. You can get away with one coat but I think two coats looks better because one coat looks a little streaky. It dries quickly but I wouldn't touch anything right after painting my nails. Once applied and dried I think it looks like a gel. It looks glossy without a top coat but I would suggest applying a top coat just to make it last longer. It lasts 3 days with minimal chipping on my nails. Overall I think this polish is great when you want to paint your nails quickly and it looks really nice. I would like to try other shades from this collection as well.

Bourjois polishes retail around $10.99-$11.99 CAD.

Sincerely, JoJo.♥
